Overview: VerifiedVoting.org
The Verified Voting web site was created for the purpose of opposing paperless electronic voting. The new generation of voting systems, very popular with a large number of elections officials who appear to be mis-informed and technically-challenged, are a threat to democracy. Not just America's democracy, however; these systems are being installed globally. It is a serious and complex problem that needs to be resolved!
We built the site because we recognized the need to communicate with the American public, and with our legislators, the views of those who recognize the threat these machines pose. Central to the web site is a "Resolution on Electronic Voting" authored by several leading computer scientists. One goal of the site was to gain endorsements for that resolution. Those endorsers became our mailing list, and our volunteer force.
While www.VerifiedVoting.org is informative and robust from the public perspective, it is equally robust on the administrative side as well.
The database includes many tables including endorsers (see image to the left), US Senators and Representatives, and media contacts. Complete administration was provided for each of those tables. We implemented our Content Management System for a great deal of the content within the site, such as news and
announcements, and cloned that system to manage state data. The calendar is database-driven of course, as are the Internet links.
Crucial to our efforts was our endorser database. From this invaluable resource, we mined passionate volunteers for many objectives, including lobbying Congress, organizing other volunteers on a local basis, and donating funds.
In order to perform searchse among thousands of records, we build a powerful search tool over the endorser table:
As you will note, we built this tool to allow maximum flexibility, including the ability to download the search results into a .XLS worksheet.
